Crate-Training Your Pets

In an emergency, your pet may need to travel and stay in a crate for an extended period of time.

Crate training takes some time and effort, but it is an essential part of being prepared for an evacuation with your animals in the event of a disaster. A crate is also a safe way of transporting your dog in the car, or to take your cat to and from the vet. If you properly train your pets to use the crate, they will think of it as a safe place and can ease stress in the event you should need to leave in a hurry.

Excellent crate training instructions are available on The Humane Society of the United States web site. Or, contact a veterinarian for an animal behaviorist in your area that can assist you with training. We urge you to have a crate ready for each pet in your home and have your pets accustomed to using it.
